Cubs Should Prioritize Jalen Beeks as a Bullpen Upgrade

Even after the addition of Tyson Miller , the Chicago Cubs are looking for bullpen help. Miller provides depth, but the team is still reeling from multiple injuries to key contributors . One name that could be of interest is Colorado Rockies' left-hander Jalen Beeks. Since being claimed off waivers by the Rockies, his 2.21 ERA has been quite impressive out of the bullpen.

At 13-28, the Rockies are destined for another losing season, and holding onto a 30-year-old relief pitcher doesn't make much sense. Trading a waiver claim while he's thriving is just smart business.

While the Cubs clearly need high-leverage bullpen help, they could also benefit from a left-handed specialist. Beeks has shown the ability to get left-handed batters out when needed.

Beeks' resurgence was on full display Monday. After walking the bases loaded against the San Diego Padres, he came from behind and induced a game-ending double play off the bat of slugger Manny Machado.

The Cubs have seen leads slip away in crunch time far too often. If Beeks can sustain his production, he should be of interest to Jed Hoyer.

The Cubs have the prospects to acquire upgrades to the big-league roster. It's up to the front office to make it happen.

Giving Craig Counsell another Mark Leiter Jr.-caliber pitcher would help ease the load on the North Siders' dominant starting rotation. If the Rockies are open for business, Beeks would be a quality fit for the Cubs' bullpen.
