Roma were given the chance to add two goalkeepers for cheap this summer, but they ultimately decided to stick with Rui Patricio despite his uneven start. In particular, the Giallorossi were offered Hugo Lloris and Kasper Schmeichel, Il Messaggero reports.

The Tottenham icon ultimately stayed put despite advanced talks with Lazio this summer. After that deal collapsed, he touched base with the other capital club, but the transfer didn’t come together.

La Lupa also passed on Schmeichel, who has just been released by Nice and will join Anderlecht. Even though Patricio has rarely been spectacular during his time with Roma, José Mourinho and goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos fully trust him. They were instrumental in purchasing him from Wolverhampton after a few years of uncertainty between the sticks.

In addition, even had the Special One pushed to onboard a new shot-stopper, the brass would have had reservations due to their Financial Fair Play limitations, even though they wouldn’t have spent much for a new option. They used up all their room to maneuver for Romelu Lukaku.

Our Take on Roma and Patricio

As expected, they stood pat at the position because they had more pressing needs. Adding another so-so veteran wouldn’t have been a swell choice. Signing a talent to groom behind the starter, as they apparently lost faith in Mile Svilar quickly, would have been the ideal way to go.
